KITCHEN RENOVATION PROJECT

KITCHEN RENO PROJECT UPDATES

July 23rd Update

The painting was completed last week as planned and they have begun hanging new ceiling tiles in all the renovated areas. The entranceway, classroom 3/4 and Lets Play closet has been completed and the main kitchen underway. During the design build process we moved to a level ceiling as opposed to a vaulted ceiling as was initially thought. The ceiling is now level but 1.5 ft higher than the previous ceiling height. This gives the airy feeling across the whole space and enables more even lighting. In the next two weeks we see the flooring installation, completion of the ceiling and roof penetrations for the new venting. Special attention has been given to flashing design elements which we are very pleased with. The kitchen cabinets are still scheduled for delivery early August which means the schedule is moving along nicely. Please take care to avoid entering the construction area during the period of floor installation.

Late breaking floor prep has begun!

July 16th Update

Hello from the KRC! Construction continues to move along as planned. Dry wall work was completed last week and today the painters have begun. Pictures show the main area primed and the classroom including the new maintenance and storage closet, Let’s Play closet and entrance area on the fellowship hall side painted to match existing. Painting is planned to be finished later this week and flooring to begin next week. The hoarding wall inside classroom 3/4 has been removed which is another exciting development. As tempting as it is to sneak a peak at the reno, it is important that we remain out of the rooms at this time as wet paint and floor prep/installation is in full swing.

All of the finishes have been submitted and production is in full swing for cabinetry etc. It is getting very exciting!!

Many thanks everyone for your patience as things have been shuffled a bit again this week as we prep for flooring.

Take care all!!

-The KRC.

July 12th Update

This week work has continued on drywall in the kitchen, new entrance area and storage closet in classroom 3/4. Taping and mudding should be done by the end of the week and sanding early next week. Painting in these areas will start shortly after. KRC is happy to report that construction remains on schedule! As a team we worked to finalize the flooring selection, painting plans and serving windows door finishes and are excited on how all seems to be coming together.

July 5th Update

Construction continues well, working right on schedule to date. This week drywall work has begun in earnest. Electrical rough ins are complete and have passed inspection. We have spent more time on flooring choices and are almost there, along with the finish for the sliding door. We saw some lighting options this week and are excited about what we have seen!!

We have had a couple of volunteers for floor scraping….feel free to reach out to me if you are interested in helping with this project.

Pictures are showing the drywall progress!!

June 28th Update

On site activity continued this week with electrical wiring going into the walls as well as plumbing lines! A new electrical box has been put in place behind the existing kitchen door and work in the basement electrical room also underway.

Off site, the KRC team thanks all who stopped by to add comments and suggestions for the cabinet and flooring finishes. All this info has helped us finalize cabinet finishes and narrow flooring options. The supplier for our appliances was chosen this week through a competitive bidding process. We are excited to have signed the contract for the appliances ahead of an anticipated July 1 price increase!  We are awaiting samples for the finish options on the new siding door window and will keep you posted.

We do have one more task to continue to reduce the demolition expenses. We need to remove the paper backing remaining from the old servery flooring. This requires scraping it off…a bit of a time-consuming process. If you are interested or able to help with this, please email me at mburnett@uwaterloo.ca

Photos this week show new individual circuits being wired around the L-shaped counter area, overall look of the room, plumbing progress in the wall, overall kitchen space view and keen floor scrapers!!

KITCHEN REVOVATION PROJECT FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE FINAL REPORT

The total amount raised for the project as of June 21 is $674,328.74. A current expense budget was also presented and explained by John Rempel (member of CMC and the KRP committee). Expenses currently look to fall between $650,000 and $707,000 depending on a few lines which are variable at the moment. For a breakdown of expected expenses click here.

June 21st Update

Construction has continued, proceeding as planned and very close to the expected schedule which is great news!! Since our last report, the plumbing rough-ins have been completed, including installation of the new grease interceptor and additional floor drainage as required. Plumbing rough-in has been inspected and passed and the concrete was poured on Wednesday in the exposed trenches (picture taken on Wednesday afternoon showing new cement!). The new framing has also been inspected and passed.

The KRC has been working diligently refining and finalizing the built-in design and details. Following a couple of visits to the Woodland Horizons showroom, the committee is ready to share suggested cabinetry finishes and countertop options. We will have these onsite this Sunday for review, comments and opportunity to weigh in on your preference!! We will also have some flooring options present for viewing although we have not had as much time to review flooring.

Work is continuing on finalizing appliances, including competitive bidding. We aim to process this order asap to avoid an expected July 1 price increase.

Updates from the Kitchen Fundraising Committee will be shared during the congregational meeting on Sunday June 21.

June 7th Update

Construction update from the KRC

Construction on our kitchen renovation is well underway. Frey has set up temporary hoarding walls surrounding the Construction area. The demolition of the original servery is complete and the wall connecting the two rooms is down giving us a great view of the expanded area for the new kitchen. Preparations for the new entrance into classroom 3/4 have happened and a new support beam is in place to accommodate the larger entry door into the kitchen from the fellowship hall. Tuesday, the cement floor was cut to create trenches in preparation for new plumbing. We will continue to share pictures and information as the project unfolds.

May 31st Update

From the Kitchen Renovation Fundraising Committee
The current status of the donation/pledges committed to date towards our target of $600,000 is $553,171! A grateful THANK YOU to all who have contributed to date! If you are still planning to contribute, please look to have your donation/pledge form submissions in as soon as possible as we are hoping to conclude our campaign by the first week of June.

May 24th Update

Say goodbye to the old servery!
Demolition on the old kitchen facilities has begun! Thank you to the ReStore, who have already completed a significant portion of the demolition and removal of existing cabinetry and the dishwasher.

May 7th Update

The Kitchen Reno Committee (KRC) is happy to report that our project package was submitted on May 1, on our behalf by Frey, to the Township of Woolwich for the permitting process. This is exciting news as we can continue to work towards a projected June 1 start date.

We are also excited to report that the ReStore has been secured to complete a significant portion of the demolition and removal of existing cabinetry and the dishwasher. This is great news as much of the servery will have another life, also helping reduce demolition costs associated with the project.

The KRC now needs to prepare our existing space for renovation. Demolition is scheduled to begin on May 19th, This means that the servery will be closed for use as of May 13th to allow time for packing up the kitchen. All groups that have food in the kitchen need to ensure that it is removed from the cabinets before that date.

We are looking for help in 2 ways.

  1. We are looking for volunteers to help with the packing up and moving kitchen materials to the basement while the kitchen is out of use. This will happen on Wednesday afternoon May 13th, and on Thursday May 14th. If you are able to help please sign up on this sheet
  2. The second way that you can help is to lend the church Rubbermaid or similar plastic totes in which to store materials for the next 5 months or so. If you have clean totes of any size, please mark them with your name and bring them to church. You can leave them in room 10 in the basement.

Thank you everyone for your patience as we begin a period of renovation. Please note that we will be moving the fridges and coffee making supplies to another location to maintain some capacity over the period of renovation. Please watch for details to come.

In addition to regular updates in the Info Sheet, check back at this page to watch for regular updates and photos as the renovation progresses!

If you have any questions or concerns – please reach out to one of the renovation committee members.

Many thanks from the KRC,
